Insight

When Craftwood Interiors received an enquiry from St Peter’s School, Bournemouth regarding their 6th Form Lounge, we jumped at the chance of being involved with the project. One of our project managers, Heather Baskerville, met with Mike Antram, Deputy Head Teacher, in order to gain a proper understanding of what the client was after in terms of aesthetics, layout and other practicalities. Budgets were also discussed at this point to ensure that our proposal would be in the right ball park figure.

The Solution

The layout needed to provide a dynamic social space for the students with plenty of opportunity to sit quietly with a couple of friends, and also provide areas for larger groups of young people for shared discussion. The aim being positive communication. The area also needed to double as an informal assembly area so needed to be able to seat over 100 students at full capacity.  Craftwood Interiors’ in-house design department came up with several initial layouts which were put forward for discussion. After a short while and some tweaking a final layout was decided upon by the client.

In addition to this there was the possibility that the area may be needed at examination times, and as such Craftwood came up with a method of making the island units (see image below) demountable. This means that these sections of seating can be separated down the centre and re-positioned outside the room at exam times, if required.

A heavy duty vinyl was used on the seating which is tough and easy to clean, and a colour was selected with the client that was kind on dirt and contrasted well with the room’s new flooring.

Near to the site fit date, the client contacted us asking if we could help them with some tables that could double as extra seating when required. They had tried to find something off the shelf but to no avail…..so Craftwood designed and made some cubes with sides to match the seating plinths and which could be used as either tables or occasional seating

The Results

The project manager, Heather, stayed in full communication with the client from start to finish, ensuring that Mike had one point of contact with an in depth understanding of the project.  With a successful installation completed, Mike Antram, Deputy Head Teacher of St Peters School commented; “We were greatly impressed with the high standard and quality workmanship Craftwood Interiors has delivered. We’ve been inundated with positive comments from students, teachers and visitors to the school. Students in particular really appreciate the investment made in creating a high quality social space especially for them.”
