Gleneagles Hotel, Mitchell Room

REF: 16-1110

The Brief

The Gleneagles Hotel has to be one of the most renowned in the world, 5-star rated - Britain's highest accolade - and voted best in the world for facilities by the Conde Nast Traveller Gold List, it even boasts its own railway station! Following acquisition by Ennismore in 2015 its new owners announced a programme of refurbishments for 2016. They would work with some of the UK's most distinguished designers in giving the hotel a "fresh" new look while remaining true to its original Art Deco styling, reputation for luxury and distinct Scottish heritage. Located in the Dormy Clubhouse, the Mitchell Room (named after Henry "Abe" Mitchell, Britain's finest golfer of the 1910s - 1930s) was one of the first areas to receive an upgrade. Designers Macaulay Sinclair looked to Craftwood for the high specification seating required.

The Solution

Situated in the Dormy Clubhouse, The Mitchell Room is Gleneagles' corporate events venue, available for private dinners, media events, or even a pre-golf meeting over breakfast. Among the seating manufactured by Craftwood for the refurbishment is this sprung base run with its back in horizontally contrasting leather and tweed.

The careful alignment of the pattern of the tweed fabric at the join between seat sections, plus the quality of the saddle stitch at the seam between leather and fabric, illustrates well Craftwood's attention to detail and standard of workmanship.

Craftwood's seating runs for the Mitchell Room were manufactured to accommodate these feature end panels made by others, repeating the vertical wood 'fluted' effect of the wall cladding.

The leather upholstered capping, in the same chestnut-coloured leather as the upper back of the seating, lends a warmth to the glow of this Art Deco-style lamp.

The refurbishment programme, completed in readiness for the 2016 golf season, cemented Gleneagles' position as the world's premier hotel and resort among the golfing fraternity, with it receiving Today’s Golfer magazines's Best Hotel/Resort Award for 2016. However the new owners were keen to point out that the restyled Dormy Clubhouse was not intended solely as the preserve of golfers, even if it was the perfect setting for a pre-round breakfast. Advertising that its fine views, modern cuisine and distinctive seating areas would appeal to golfers and non-golfers alike, some of the thinking behind the refurbishment can been gleaned from the desire to make it a place whose warm surroundings encouraged visitors to "linger the whole day through". This would require a comforting setting as well as high standards of comfort from the seating. As for the Mitchell Room, Craftwood's fixed seating with its sprung base and high standard of finish is on par for such a prestigious venue.
