Nando’s Kilburn

The Brief

In early 2015 Fusion Design and Architecture were tasked with updating the interior of this well-established Nando’s restaurant. The aim was to inject the now recognisable Afro-Portuguese vibe into this well-loved site on Kilburn High Road. Craftwood were invited to create some suitably cool and contemporary fixed seating to update the seating layout.

The Solution

The introduction of zesty colours along with an array of contrasting textures throughout the restaurant creates a real sensory delight. The design intent was to open up the space, which had previously been heavily furnished with dark furniture. A more social dining experience replaced the pre-existing loose table and chairs at the front of restaurant, where Craftwood created a bespoke oak frame banquette. Our plain back style is brought to life with the use of bold striped fabric to the seat back and a vibrant red leather seat. This banquette features a distinct woven rope back detail, which echoes the stunning rope lighting installation at the rear of the restaurant.

The use of ikat inspired fabrics for the back of the new “U” booths contrasts with the bold block coloured leathers used on the curvaceous metal framed booths, emphasising the brand’s Afro-Portuguese roots.

The mild steel mesh screens with decorative woven cord detail divide up the space and creates an intimate dining experience without compromising the sense of light and openness. All of our seating is free standing at Kilburn, emphasising the sense of light and space throughout.

Tucked away at the rear of the restaurant, the raised nook area is furnished with our bespoke stitch fluted back and seat banquette seating, mounted on stylish mild steel hairpin legs. Again, an African inspired printed fabric is paired with a rich coloured leather, creating a modern and relaxed energy. The muted tones of the seating here allows for the zesty coloured light installation overhead to be the star of the show.

A bold mix of colours, materials, textures and finishes amalgamate to create a venue that reflects Nando’s adventurous spirit. Working closely with the designers, Craftwood have used our years of experience working with Nando’s to turn Fusions DNAs design into a functional yet beautiful dining experience.
