Office design has evolved considerably in recent times, making spaces more functional and accessible for employees. Large corporates like Google have redesigned the office concept to increase collaboration and innovation among their workers. When it comes to office seating and co-working spaces, we look at why booths could be the ideal seating solution.
The need for breakout areas has revolutionised office seating. Instead of only providing traditional banks of desks, many workplaces now have additional zones for informal staff meetings or sociable rest areas. One small change in an office environment can inspire creativity, ideas and new perspectives on existing problems. Booth seating is a versatile way to divide areas into functional spaces that can encourage co-working and provide relaxation.
A well-designed office can help to increase productivity levels among workers. Booth seating is a popular choice for office environments because it can be used for areas designed for teamwork and breaks. Within commercial settings, booths can be used to create hot desks, breakout zones for team meetings or rest areas for workers to eat their lunch.
As a type of bespoke fixed seating, booths are usually custom-designed and upholstered to align with an office interior scheme. Booth seating is cosier and more intimate in design than other forms of built-in seating. When designed to feature high backs, they can provide a level of privacy too.
Drawing from company brand palettes, different colours can be used for the furniture upholstery and other core design elements to create separate narratives within large rooms. Choose restful colours for an area designed for employee breaks, compared to bolder and brighter colours for a co-working space. It’s essential to get your colour schemes right for office walls, flooring and furniture, if you want to encourage collaboration and creativity.
Think about how you want employees to feel and the different types of activities they are likely to be undertaking when seated in different areas. You could choose accent colours or contrasting shades for the booth upholstery to clearly define work and rest areas. Align the booth seat covers to your brand, design concept and office interior scheme.
When you are deciding on custom-built seating for your office space, there are a few factors to consider. Do you need booths for more than one area or to complement an existing office space? How many seats do you need and how will the space be used by workers?
There are different ways to incorporate booth-style seating into office environments. If you are planning to divide the space into different zones, agree an objective for each individual area. This will enable you to choose suitable concepts and colours for every space.
As an example, we created booths for a new office area at R Twining with high, triple roll- back seats to enhance privacy. Upholstered in rich tan leather, the final look beautifully offset the layered timber wall adjacent to each booth. Positioned away from existing banks of desks in the room, the booths can be used for informal staff meetings and visitor hot desks.
As another example, we designed booth seating for Cohaesus, a technology company for global advertising and communication agencies. Working closely with Gomm Studio, we produced face-to-face booths with elegant oak veneered capping and plinths. One of the booth seats was designed to be removable to allow access to pipework and a valve.
When we designed seat cushions for Contiki, a popular youth travel company, we considered the intended purpose of the space. Jordan Littler Interior Design created a fresh, modern area within the London-based company’s basement, where workers could relax and socialise. With straight clean lines and seating around the walls, we created comfortable seat pads and scatter cushions in bright, zany patterns to encourage casual conversations.
Bespoke booth seating can be designed and upholstered in a variety of materials, transforming dull offices into vibrant workspaces. If you are looking to create custom-designed seating for an office, always consider the intended purpose for each space.
When redesigning areas within commercial premises, there needs to be a focus on the employees’ needs. If you plan to have different seating zones, consider how individual areas will be used in terms of function and aesthetics. Drawing from your brand palette, use different colours to divide spaces and echo this in the booth upholstery and other elements.
